Kartus stretched his arm over Prophecy’s head and focused through the Phoenix Sword. Far ahead, a flash of white flame illuminated the road for a brief moment. The light adequately revealed anything hidden in the darkness. Prophecy did not like it, but she learned to tolerate the flashes. The sword blade only showed small wisps of flame. Kartus felt relieved that he remembered how to minimize the blade fire for the occasions when he rode. He would have to remember to share it with Jas.

“The city is just ahead,” Argus remarked encouragingly.

“I think I can make it,” Karina groaned.

Kartus thought they could have made it back to Lindor City before nightfall, but that proved to be too optimistic. They had to leave the four soldiers to fend for themselves, as their horses did not have the strength to keep the pace. Arnil and Jaipp, the two Flame Rider scouts, rode to meet with the other Flame Riders. With the four horses remaining, Karina did her best to remove their exhaustion, but it took a heavy toll on her.

They reached the city gates late in the night. A lone guard walked out to meet Kartus as he approached. “No entry until dawn,” the guard announced with a dry voice.

“I am Kartus, Guide to The Phoenix Mage! Ulric has been defeated in battle. Janair is on his way here. Rouse the guards and prepare to defend the city!”

Over the next two days, Lindor City thrust itself into a frenzy of activity. Many women and children evacuated the city to stay with relatives or friends. Lord Bornir disappeared as soon as word spread that Kartus had returned. Kartus decided it best not to search for that despicable life lord. He needed to spend his time preparing the city for an attack. Anyway, he did not want to think about what Karina might do if she ever found Bornir. Lord Gere seemed to be the next in line to take charge. Gere worked well with Kartus to get the city defenses in place. Men streamed in from all parts of the Kingdom to defend their capital. Many routed soldiers also returned, confirming that Janair’s army marched to Lindor City. They also confirmed that Jas, Varene, Bugh, Horos, and Ulric had been captured, and that Lord Rontir had perished.

Kartus decided it no longer prudent to stay in the castle, so Karina, Inman, and Argus joined him at the guesthouse, where they first stayed in the city. The four of them sat at a large rectangular table in the common room, late in the afternoon. They had the room and the guesthouse to themselves.

“Sergeant,” Kartus addressed Argus, “How well can this city hold against a siege?”

“I don’t have any experience with city sieges,” Argus admitted. “That’s not something the Flame Riders do. I can say the soldiers here are poorly trained and equipped. They are just farmers and craftsmen who have decided to take up arms for the day. On the bright side, though, I don’t think Janair’s army is any better.
